THE REGULATING COUNCIL AS GUARANTEE OF QUALITY

In 1998 we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the creation by the Government of Navarra of the CONTROL BOARD of the NAVARRAN PACHARAN SPECIFIC DESIGNATION ("Denominación Específica Pacharán Navarro") and of the coming into effect of its REGULATIONS.

The Control Board ("Consejo Regulador") of Navarran Pacharan, is a certifying body under European Standard EN 45011. It has a quality control system in place that ensures the production of pacharan by those companies registered under the Designation meet the requirements established in the Regulations. The exhaustive controls undertaken by the Control Board include:

  • Inspection of facilities.
  • Control of raw materials.
  • Control of production.
  • Control of the final product.
Sloe berries, both in terms of quantity and quality, are what constitute the main difference between Navarran Pacharan and other pacharans.

The companies registered by the Control Board make their pacharan exclusively with ripe sloe berries with a ratio of 125 to 250 grams per litre of pacharan. Pacharans not regulated by the Designation may use other berries and are only required to use 62 grams of sloe berries per litre.

Because of this, the Control Board pays particular attention to the level of ripeness and the quantity of sloe berries used for those pacharans protected by the Designation.
